The date on my last post was almost a year ago. It's not that I've stopped sharing photos. It's just that I tend to post them all on my main blog, The View From Here. So I've decided to consolidate. Abraham Lincoln's Home in Springfield May 29

On our way to a wedding in the Chicago area, we stopped to tour Lincoln's home in Springfield, IL. This is his writing desk.
Mary Todd Lincoln's bed and one of her dresses. The wallpaper is the original pattern.
Toys in the boys' room. The Lincolns had four sons, but only one lived into adulthood.
Their kitchen.

The loo. So, this is how important politicians live. Nice to know.
The balcony railing is also original. Some of the ornamentation was broken off by the rambunctious boys.
After touring the house we walked into downtown Springfield. A church door.
Another church door.
Building across the street from the outdoor table where we ate lunch.
Also across the street.
Likewise.
My lunch. Chicken teriyaki salad with mango salsa. Yummy.
We passed the state capitol building on our way back to the car. Charming downtown area. And Lincoln's home is definitely worth seeing if you're ever in the Springfield area.

Knox Presbyterian Women's Conference May 1-2

Friday, May 1, I spoke to the women of Knox Presbyterian Church in Detroit. They color coordinated the decorations and flowers to match the cover of Parting the Waters. :)
This yacht club is a famous landmark.
Saturday morning the conference organizers took me to breakfast at The Pancake House.

Much to my honor and delight, the women of Trinity Chapel Bible Church invited me to speak at their spring retreat. On my way to the retreat center in Glen Rose, Texas, I met Heather Goodman for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory in Dallas. After lunch we posed for a few wind-blown portraits.

George's Birthday Dinner April 22

George requested homemade chicken pot pie.
Most of the ingredients were growing in the back yard.

Fresh from the oven.The birthday boy with his birthday basket of goodies. We also had death-by-chocolate cake, but the pictures look like all the other death-by-chocolate cakes I've photographed, so I'm not including one. Trust me--it was beautiful. And delicious. :)

Book Signing at Barron's April 18

"Fused Glass Has Evolved" (Thought you might want to know.) Barron's in Longview has all kinds of lovely stuff for sale. Go there and buy some of it.

The only picture I got of myself all day. This lovely young lady asked a bunch of great questions and made some insightful observations before she purchased a copy of the book for herself. She's ten.
My friend and former critique partner, Nanci Huyser, sat beside me. That's one of the nice things about a multi-author signing. Always someone interesting to talk to! :)

Baby horse!

Tuesday evening I went to a dinner at the Roseville Bed & Breakfast. When I pulled into the parking lot, I saw this baby horse lying near the fence in the pasture.
The B&B owner saw me taking pictures and came out. He told me the baby was only one day old!
The mom kept pawing at him and nudging him with her muzzle to wake him up. I think she was nervous because we were so close.

I loved it when he stood up hiney first!

Flowers and Pixies

Last Wednesday I drove to Dallas, expecting to fly to Colorado the next day, but a blizzard interfered, our flight was canceled, and my sister and I had a day in Dallas to play.
We decided to head to the Dallas Arboretum.

The spring foliage was in full bloom, and the overcast skies provided wonderful lighting for photos.

But photographing flowers wasn't our only goal. We also brought along an assortment of dresses and accessories snatched from one of my mom's over-stuffed closets. If we couldn't be skiing in Colorado, we figured we might as well amuse ourselves with the Ever-Popular First Annual Gown Girls Spring Show and Model Shoot at the Arboretum. (I just made up that name. Work with me.)
This lovely shot was taken using my dad's ghetto-quality, cob-web encrusted tripod and my camera's self timer.

I'Kuai and Jenny Hung prepared a fabulous Chinese luncheon at their lovely home in George's honor.

George had to play for his supper.
Before he moved to America from Taiwan, I'Kuai sang John Denver songs to learn English. He still loves them.
"Country roads, take me home . . ."
George played, I'Kuai sang, and this little cutie danced.
After the concert, we lingered around tea and pleasant conversation.
Congratulations, Dr. Damoff. I'm so proud of you! xo

Parting the Waters Book Release

Thursday, December 4, we held our local book release at the Marshall Visual Arts Center. My dear friend, Pam Dowd, made three beautiful arrangements for the tables.
As our way of saying "thank you" to a community that played a huge role in this story, we gave one free copy per family. Additional copies sold for $10 each.
Friends made cookies.
Jacob also signed books, with the help of his long-time aide and friend, Rusty Mauldin.
Messing with the camera man (my husband). I told Chloe to stick out her tongue, too, but she was too polite.
Guests mingle in the visual arts center, a spacious old building that was originally a laundry and now hosts art exhibits and other events. We enjoyed a steady stream of come-and-go visitors, and gave away/sold almost 300 books.
It was so much fun to sign copies for dear folks who prayed and ministered to us in countless ways.
Precious friends. I'm the one without any books. :)
Claudia Jones is the wife of the man who dove into the lake on impulse and found Jacob at the bottom. She drove to East Texas from Little Rock, Arkansas to be with us. Pam Dowd remained a constant presence throughout our ordeal. Her daughter, Natalie, was Jacob's best friend. They are both important "characters" in the story.
Another dear friend, Jeff Franzen, sent this bouquet. It was delivered to me at the signing table mid-event--one of many beautiful moments in the evening. Thanks to everyone who came and the many who continue to pray for Jacob. We love and appreciate you!

I downloaded photoshop CS3 yesterday, and I feel like a third grader trying to wrap my mind around War and Peace. Of course, I immediately started playing with colors and filters. This daisy has been color-adjusted, twirled, sphericalized, underpainted, and I don't remember what else. I could amuse myself with some of the funky fun features for months, but I'm also determined to learn the important technical stuff, too.

All you photogs in the crowd, feel free to share your success secrets and favorite features! (And please use small words. Thank you.)

Show Me . . .

You! (Er, me.) Today's assignment from Robert (Thoughts of a Father) is to "show me yourself," so I'm taking this opportunity to share a few updates with the pictures. In this first shot I'm modeling the lovely necklace and bracelet George brought back from Ivory Coast, West Africa--a gift to me from Soro Guebessonguile and his wife Rachelle, an African family with whom he stayed for a week and who adopted him as their father. Cool (long) story.
September 9 was my birthday, and George baked a death-by-chocolate cake! Here I am photographing it . . .
And here's the photograph I took. (Despite the number of candles, I didn't turn twelve.)
I took this shot specifically for the project. It's a self-portrait of most of me, minus the parts that get me in the most trouble.

Show Me . . .

Robert of Thoughts of a Father has been hosting a photographic challenge all week, and I'm finally jumping in. His theme is "show me . . ." with the object changing each new day. Today I grabbed my camera and shot them all. Here are the results. On Sunday, he said "show me your mailbox."
Ours is built into the front door. Here's a close up. Monday was "show me your kitchen."
This is the only shot I didn't take today. I borrowed it from the shots I took for Anna Carson's Project Blue. Tuesday was "show me your front door."
I've always loved how thick and heavy our door is. (Here's another view of our "mailbox" too.) Wednesday was "show me an object of sentimental value."
This rocking chair belonged to my husband's grandfather. We found it in the old family barn in rural Ohio. The varnish was black and the original metal-spring, leather seat had been converted to a nest by rats. George refinished it, and I reupholstered it. Now its honeyed tones warm our hearts and our living room. Thursday was "show me a favorite view."
Photographs of my kids, each taken when they were 18 months old. My house is full of photos from many eras of our lives. I love them! Friday was "show me something that relaxes you."
When I need therapy (or just want to make music), you'll often find me here.

Tomorrow is the last day of the "Show Me" project, and the assignment is "Show me yourself!" See you then. :)

On June 30, Luke returned from nine months in Ivory Coast, West Africa. The next day we drove to Colorado where we spent a week with my sister's family. This is Luke listening to an outdoor concert by the band, America.

Obligatory Fourth of July fireworks shots--only this show happened on the 3rd.

The next morning we watched the parade. The floats are lots of fun, but most of my favorite shots were of children.

The Lion's Head area of Vail has been completely remodeled to resemble a European village.

Summer in Colorado means beautiful flowers everywhere.

I had a busy weekend and didn't get to do much online. Saturday I attended a bridal shower in a home that might as well be a modern art gallery. Original artwork everywhere you looked--walls, table surfaces, tops of cabinets. I took lots of pictures (and even managed to include a few of the bride opening gifts and such--good thing since that was the point). I liked these for Project Black.

Now I need to go to Anna Carson Photography and catch up on everyone else's entries!

You know you're getting old when real-live firemen look more like little boys at play. Strolling through Vail last week, we came across this 12-year-old . . . er, I mean, strapping young man leading his fellow fireguy in a training drill. (Yeah. This was the older, more experienced one!)
The trainee came halfway down the ladder head first, then swung his feet around to complete the descent. Impressive. We gave him a round of applause and a cookie.

There's nothing quite as beautiful as a perfect kiss. Artists through the centuries have tried to capture the allure, the romance, the je ne sais quoi of this intimate gesture.

Well, gang, today is your lucky day. Now you (yes, you!) can learn how the perfect kiss is accomplished. Curtis and Grace--professional kissers after eight months of marriage--demonstrate how it's done. First you find a cozy spot. Maybe a folding chair after a back-yard wedding?
The approach is very important. Take a big breath . . .
Then move in for the "Mmmmm" phase . . .
. . . followed by the, "Wah!"
If you're really brave, go for one more accompanied by a tight squeeze.
And that's all there is to it!

Let the Little Children Come

Vacation Bible School is over. The kids have all jumped back into their time machines and returned to the 21st century, trading robes for play clothes and rustic crafts for video games. Hopefully snatches of story and a sense of belonging will follow them, seeds will take deep root, and they'll enjoy the fruit for the rest of their lives.

Project Blue 8: Troas, A.D. 49

Welcome to the ancient city of Troas. VBS started at our church last night, and the theme is Paul's missionary journeys. I'm the city leader for the citizens of Troas. We live in a coastal city, so our veranda is draped with blue fabric to remind us of the lovely Aegean Sea.

Beneath our breezy canopy, we relax on cushions around a low table, where we nibble on raisins, almonds, and freshly baked bread while we discuss all the exciting events that took place in the market place that day. Don't you wish you could be a citizen of Troas? :)

A few minutes ago I opened my t-shirt drawer to grab one for my workout, and these two practically demanded I let them make a Project Blue debut. They also spouted their usual philosophical proclamations, but I don't mind hearing it again and again, because I agree. Life is good!

Today I went to the Marshall Depot to read a story about a train.
This is Erin. She likes cameras.
This is a child whose name I don't know. The anti-Erin, you might say.
But just as adorable.

Project Blue 6: Swings and Swimsuits

Ever since Project Blue started, I've had my eye on our neighbor's blue swing set. Yesterday afternoon when I saw her outside with her daughters, both wearing blue swimsuits, I just bopped on over with my camera. My neighbor is accustomed to my photographic randomness, so she didn't bat an eye when I explained my mission. When I stopped shooting, she asked, "Are you sure you got enough blue?"

Not only did I capture enough blue, I gave their family some crazy-neighbor fodder for dinner conversation. :)

Okay, so, I went out to the garden to photograph the bluebird house and fell in love with these flowers. George planted two varieties of sunflowers amidst the vegetables, purely for visual effect. (Gotta love an artistic biologist!) I had to stand on a chair to take their portraits, because they're already over seven feet tall.
Blue may be playing a supporting role, but I'd say it deserves an Oscar for making the sunflowers shine.

My husband's cousin is a potter whose whimsical pieces are as delightful as they are functional. This octagonal teapot has been cheering up my kitchen for ten years now.

I could easily sustain Project Blue for two weeks without ever leaving my kitchen, but I won't. I already have my eye on the bluebird house at the corner of our garden. Until then, tea anyone?

A couple of days ago I glanced out the den window and caught my breath. George had hung our American flag, and the setting sun made it glow almost as though it were lit from within.

Today we honor those who've given their lives to preserve freedom. May their memory glow just as bright.

Curtis' Birthday Dinner

At our house a birthday person gets to pick whatever he wants for dinner, and--as the newest member of our family--Curtis made the most of his debut selections.

The menu: Lamb Tikka Marsala, Vegetables in Saffron Cream Sauce, Basmati Rice, Garlic Naan, and Mango Lasee!
We'd never made any of these dishes before, so it was quite an adventure in the kitchen. Everyone pitched in and, wow, was it ever yummy!
For dessert, Curtis by-passed a traditional cake for banana splits with a Hawaiian twist.
We started with bananas, of course. Then three flavors of ice cream: coffee, chocolate, and pineapple coconut.
Next we drizzled hot fudge sauce . . .
Added freshly whipped cream . . .
Sprinkled chopped pecans . . .
And crowned the masterpiece with a maraschino cherry.
Curtis got a candle, too.
Happy Birthday, Curtis! And thanks for expanding our culinary horizons. We love you.

Tons o' Sudsy Fun

Erin Lambers, the potter I featured in my Christmas Platter post, recently gave me a bag full of beautiful, fragrant, artisan soaps and an assignment. Her mom makes the soap and wanted photographs for contests and advertising. The goal was to capture the soap's artistry and sudsiness. Yesterday my neighbor and her daughter came over, and we went on a soap shooting spree. I'm very pleased with the results.
Amanda was the perfect model--natural, cooperative, and so cute.

The soaps are wonderfully scented, so I added flowers to suggest fragrance.
Who wants to wash hands? :)

On our 15th anniversary, George gave me a small, potted rose bush with miniature salmon-colored blooms. When it outgrew the pot, he transplanted it to the corner of the house, where it took root and flourished. A nice metaphor for our marriage. In four days we celebrate our 29th.

Tuesday evening I attended an event at a local Bed & Breakfast. As soon as I entered the dining room, I spotted this lamp in all its glorious greenness, admiring its own reflection in a gold-framed mirror. Thankfully it wasn't too proud to pose for a few portraits. ;)

Yesterday evening George went out to his garden to harvest some broccoli for dinner. Since it is clearly green, we had to take it's portrait before steaming it.

Oh, and in case you're thinking I'm spoiled to have a husband who grows fresh vegetables, he'd also been simmering a roast in the crock pot all day with homegrown herbs, diced sweet potatoes, and portabella mushrooms. So, yeah. You were right. I'm spoiled. But healthy!

Dancing with Project Green

Yesterday evening I was reading in the den when I realized I was wearing a green skirt, and the comforter across the room was also green, and why not just play with a little green photographic goodness? So I set the camera how I wanted it and asked George to stand on the sofa and click away while I twirled in a circle. Such an obliging man. :)

Once upon a time . . .
this door was green. In the cracks and crevices of memory, it clings to a bolder past--vibrant days before sun, wind, and the relentless passage of time eroded its glory. Like an intriguing twinkle in an aging eye, traces of color hint at history and make me want to lean in close and whisper, "Tell me a story."

I previously posted this shot in my Croatia album, but it immediately came to mind for Project Green. Taken on an island off the coast of Dubrovnik. March, 2008.

A couple of weeks ago I did a bridal portrait shoot with my niece. As is often the case, some of the best shots were the ones I took when she "wasn't ready." This one may be my favorite.
I chose this for Project Looking Through because I love the way the back light outlines her figure. The whole scene strikes me as ethereal and fairy-tale-ish. And what bride doesn't want to be a princess in her own fairy tale? :)

Here's my first photo for Project Looking Through. I took this one a month ago in an old stone church on an island off the coast of Croatia.

Broadway Center Stage

George took these shots for me weekend before last at the Saturday night performance of the Broadway musical revue I choreographed for Marshall High School's choirs. Still photos can't do justice to singing and dancing, but at least you'll get a flavor of the evening. These are some talented kids!

A Missionary to America. A Personal Hero.

I took the following photos at the ordination and consecration of Philip Jones by The Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda to serve as a Bishop to the Anglican Mission in the Americas.

Philip was the Episcopal priest at Trinity when Jacob nearly drowned on a school outing. He was also the one who dove into the lake, found Jacob on the bottom, and pulled him out. Here he is saying, "God has a plan for your life, Jacob, and a plan for my life, too."
The ring placed on Philip's finger at ordination. "'On that day,' declares the Lord of hosts, . . . 'I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you.'" Haggai 2:23.

Go in peace, Philip, to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Grace's Hair (Or Lack Thereof)

Yesterday, I was chatting with Grace online and she told me she'd cut her hair "very short." At my request she snapped a quick self-portrait and e-mailed it.

The Paintings of Stephen Tapp

We've known Weldon and Marcia Stutes since they were college students at ETBU a dozen or more years ago. They got married and moved to Georgetown, but later moved back and--much to our delight--rented the house right next door. Now they own a home a few blocks away. Marcia's brother, Stephen Tapp, lives in the Dallas area, but he brought his acrylic paintings to Marshall for an exhibit at the Visual Arts Center.

Stephen developed his own style. He mixes acrylic paints in various thicknesses and applies them using watercolor techniques.
As you can see, the results are gorgeous. (Click on a painting for a closer look at detail and texture.)
Weldon, one of the gentlest souls and most talented bassists in the world, provided live music, along with a folk-singing friend from ETBU.

Reflected twinkle lights imitated stars in a sky darkening to deep blue. God's ever-changing canvas! What a lovely reminder that artistic inspiration is never far away.

Christmas in Colorado

Nineteen family members gathered at my dad's place in Eagle Vail, Colorado, for Christmas this year. In the forty-one years I've been skiing, this may have been the coldest trip ever.

Grace and Curtis gave George this framed collection of photos from their wedding reception. If anyone was under the impression I'm reserved on the dance floor, you are now officially undeceived of that notion.

This is the wallpaper in the downstairs bathroom. We've been looking at it for twenty-six years and still can't figure out what's going on. (If you click the photo, you can examine a larger view. I welcome your theories in the comments!)

After a windstorm textured the table snow and made it look like cake icing, we added icicle candles.
Due to white-out conditions, icy roads, high winds, and avalanche danger, George, Jacob, and I were stranded for two extra days after the rest of the family barely made it over the pass to Denver. Our last night at the condo I made German potato soup, organic green salad, and a fresh whole-grain baguette. We finished off the left-over wine, too. Clearly it was a valiant struggle, but we managed to survive our ordeal and lived to tell about it.

Christmas Platter

I met the very cute and talented potter, Erin Lambers, when I participated in a bowl-making effort for an Empty Bowls event she's sponsoring this February. After visiting her website, I hired her to make a Christmas platter for my sister and her husband. She graciously agreed to let me photograph the process.

First Erin sliced off chunks of clay and molded them into mounds.

She sets them aside to air dry.
After the pieces were fired, I came back to observe the glazing process.

Stocking Stuff-a-Rama and Style Show

In December the women of our church gathered to fill stockings for the folks at Arc of Harrison County, a sheltered workshop for the mentally disabled. Just for fun (and because I organized the event, and everyone knows I'm all about self-amusement), we also decorated our own stockings and modeled them on a runway, with judges awarding prizes in ten different categories. Here's my contribution:
I painted peppermint candies, then stitched the wrappers with embroidery thread and topped it off with striped ribbons. Festive, don't you think? I had to set the self-timer on the camera to take my portrait, because no one was home. Those are George's suspenders and my granddad's old newsboy cap.
Here are some of the other entries. The one on the left won "most original." She used face paint to dab a snow scene on her bare feet. Clever!
This next competitor won "boldest design." (We didn't have a va-va-voom category.)
It was a fun evening, and we made and filled 30 stockings for Arc!

Fire and Ice

The first is a tree in our back yard through the shower glass. The second is the same tree reflected in the marble counter top. I didn't enhance the color of the leaves or sky in these photos. Amazing, isn't it?
